Hello All,

Happy Winter! This email will let you know of several upcoming events. Also, if you are interested in participating in a Local Food Initiative with Crossroads RC&D, Visitor's Bureau, and other folks, let me know. Crossroads contacted me to see if some TCSN members would be interested.

Here are some upcoming events:

TCSN EVENTS
1. Earth-bermed Home Tour: Saturday January 16th 11-1 pm
2. February 18th, 7-9 pm "Saving Home Energy" program

OTHER REGIONAL EVENTS
3. Sustainability Symposium, Feb 6th, 9-4 pm, Cleveland Botanical Garden
4. OEFFA Conference, Feb 13-14th, Granville OH
5. Youngstown Vegetarian Meetings, once a month

1. Earth Bermed Home Tour: Sat. January 16th, 11-1 pm

A passive solar, earth bermed home owned by Floyd and Karen McCormick, Stonecreek, will be open for public visitation Saturday, January 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors will also be able to experience the warmth of the home's primary heat source, a Russian Fireplace, custom built by an area mason. Due to the expansive brick mass of the fireplace, a one-time firing can provide heat for the home for a 48-hour period. Two cords of wood is enough to heat the home for the winter. Because of the home's design, it is also naturally cool in the summer months. Floyd, along with members of the Tuscarawas County Sustainability Network, will be present to discuss energy efficient building design principles. The home is located 3/10 mile south of Stonecreek at 6194 Stonecreek Road. For additional information, call 330-339-2127

2. Saving Home Energy: First the Facts, then the Audit
Feb 18th, 7-9 pm; KSU Tusc Rm 113

Learn practical and affordable ways to save energy, money and the environment including: reducing cold and hot water use, correcting insulation and air sealing materials and techniques, improving heating and cooling systems, reducing electrical energy use, modifying occupant behavior, and the benefits of and the opportunity to sign up for an energy audit of your home. Save money, energy, & the environment. See the tools and techniques used in an energy audit.

Program presented by Allen Zimmerman, professor of Energy Efficient Home Building at the Agricultural Technical Institute, The Ohio State University.

Tools & techniques used in conducting an energy audit presented by Keith Speirs, Architect with Speirs Architectural Design, and Ben King, Instructor of Construction Technologies, also at OSU-ATI.

Hello folks!

I am excited to announce that the TCSN has received a grant from the Solid Waste Management District to implement the Youth for Earth Stewardship Challenge. The challenge asks Tusc. County High School Juniors and Seniors to design waste reduction plans in their communities. Winning teams will receive a free trip to Earthfest '09 in Cleveland. Top winners will receive a stipend to assist with the implementation of their plans in their communities. I think this is an excellent opportunity for young people to make a positive and direct impact on their communities, while applying their learning to real-life situations. I am excited to see young people innovating solutions to the current ecological crises we face today. http://www.tellurideinstitute.org/page_103

1. Rosebud Mining is still on course to annex the land of North Township into the town of Scio in order to build a coal processing facility. At the last village council meeting, it was mentioned that Rosebud also wants to annex the bike trail, which will become its property. Only one council member objected. The next meeting is tomorrow (Weds) at 7 pm at the Municipal Building in Scio. I don't think the annexation is on the agenda; however, things get discussed off-hand and off-the-record.

2. As part of its free, monthly documentary series, Wayne County Sustainable Energy Network is screening the following films this Saturday, from 12:30-4:30 at the Wooster Public Library 220 West Liberty Street, Wooster:
The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry? "As in the rest of the world, significant water problems exist in the Southwest states because of severe drought, urbann growth, agricultural uses and population growth. The overshelming need to solve these issues in the U.S. and the world is crucial through education and planning. The severity of the American water crisis cannot be underestimated." An opportunity to learn about conservation, water reuse, desalination, population growth and future water policies."The ultimate goal is to encourage as many people as possible to believe that they can make a difference." 71 minutes
Discussion about FLOW, award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st cent. - The World Water Crisis. 84 min.

Think Outside The Bottle Campaign. www.thinkoutsidethebottle.orgTake the pledge today and opt for public tap water over bottled water by visiting the above website. Support efforts to reduce the social and environmental impacts of bottled water and to prioritize public water systems.
HEAT, a global investigation. For years, big business - from oil and
coal companies to electric utilities to car manufacturers - has resisted
change to environmental policy and stifled the debate over climate
change in America and around the globe. Now, facing rising pressure
from governments, green groups and investors alike, big business is
reshaping its approach to the environment. FRONTLINE investigates
what some businesses are doing to fend off new regulations and how
others are repositioning themselves to prosper in a radically changed
world. 120 min.
? Questions? call 330-857-6903 or see www.wcsen.org

3. Powershift '09 promises to be one of the largest civil actions for decades. 4. The science club at New Philadelphia is selling "We Add Up" t-shirts until March 6. They have an action on one side and a number on the other. (There are lots of choices with things like: compost, lights out, organic, drink tap, etc.) They are organic USA made cotton. They are meant to be conversation starters for stopping climate change. It is also a fundraiser for the club. Students will wear them to school for Earth Day. TCSN members: Please support our local students and their science club! If you'd like to order a shirt, contact Amanda (tuscsustainability@gmail.com ). Catalogs available!

Interfaith Power and Light was founded by an Episcopalian

First Presbyterian Wooster became one of about a dozen churches to become charter members. Interfaith Power and Light is working to promote a religious response to climate change all acrossAmerica. 3. There is an experimental carbon sequestration site going through the EPA permitting process. Clean Coal advocates tout Carbon Sequestration as a 'green technology,' but this is extremely speculative and being subsidized with bailout money. Please Read more below:

COMMENTS NEEDED TO WV DEP AND EPA!!
*********************************************
AEP's underground injection application comment period for the experimental Mason County carbon capture and sequestration test site. If you have not heard of CCS - it's a hole dug 2 miles into the earth where greenhouse gas-causing carbon can theoretically be injected and supposedly stay forever. We have heard from a BBC reporter that based on volume, this is the largest experimental CCS test site in the world.

The technology is risky, unproven, and expensive in terms of human and financial costs. Because the test site is on the border of Ohio and WV, measures are not being taken to insure Ohioans' health and safety. The Ohio River is considered the boundary between our counties, states, and even EPA regions.
