Energy consumption is the most important criteria in green home design and performance. Limiting energy use outranks such factors as material selection and energy source considerations in determining the “greenness” of a house. Energy conservation can be achieved in two different ways: reducing the amount of primary energy consumed to supply the useful energy requirement (energy efficiency) and reducing the end point use of nonessential energy.
This two-session workshop is the first in a series titled Improving the Energy Performance of Homes and Households: The Details and will focus on insulating and air sealing. Topics will include 1) insulation principles, materials, installation and performance and 2) air sealing principles, materials, methods and performance. Applications involving both new home construction and retrofitting existing homes will be included.
Information presented during the insulating and air sealing workshop will be drawn from two sources 1) the professional expertise and personal experience of the presenters and 2) the book Residential Energy by John Krigger and Chris Dorsi, which will serve as the text for the entire series of workshops. Copies of this book will be available at the discounted price of $25 (standard price - $35).
The February 10 session will provide an overview and basic information on insulating and air sealing. Participants will then be asked to read assigned sections of Residential Energy prior to the second session. The February 24 session will begin with a review and discussion period. This will be followed by demonstrations of thermal imaging and a blower door as tools for measuring insulation and air sealing performance.
This interactive workshop and others in the series will present straightforward, sensible, practical, and affordable ways to improve the energy performance of homes and households. Active audience participation will be an important feature of all the workshops.
