Attention K-12 Educators and Students
The OSU Wooster Campus (OARDC and ATI) will be home to the third annual Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair on Earth Day, April 20, 2010 from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. This festival will celebrate, educate and demonstrate that Green is for Life!
The Fair is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their talent and creativity. Students can compete in various categories and win prizes. Individual students, student teams, student clubs, and classes may compete in any of the following competitions:
• Creative Art Competition (all grades)
• Poster, 3-D Display, Skit, Song, Poem, or a Video Competition (all grades)
• Environmental Stewardship Essay Competition (11-12 grade only)
• Wind Turbine Design Competition (9-12 grade only)
• Most Ecological Yardscape Award (7-12 graders and their parents)
• Environmental Educator of the YearFree to the public, the fair will feature exhibits, demonstrations, companies, artisans, entertainers, and food vendors in a fun-filled indoor/outdoor environment. Competition DescriptionsCreative Art Competition - Create a visual art project that reflects an environmental stewardship theme. All media accepted. Projects will be judged on presentation, creativity, and ability to portray an environmental stewardship theme. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Grades 1-3; 4-6; 7-8; 9-12. Individual or group projects are welcome.
Earth Day Poster, 3-D Display, Skit, Song, Poem or Video Competition - Prepare and submit a poster, 3-D display, skit, song, poem or a video on the Earth Day related theme. All skits, songs, and poems must be submitted as DVDs. Win a prize in any of the following categories: Grades 1-3; 4-6; 7-8; 9-12. Individual or groups welcome.
Environmental Stewardship Essay Competition -Write an essay of about 2000 words on human ecological footprint and describe how will you reduce your own and win a scholarship for college! Use 12 font size and one inch margins. First place $250; second place $150; and third place $100. This category is open only to high school juniors and seniors.
Wind Turbine Design Competition - The objective of this competition is to conduct the necessary scientific research and development to produce the most efficient wind turbine blade design. High School teams (1 per school) of 3-5 students and one advisor will be provided a Basic Turbine Full Kit (SKU: KWT002A from Kidwind.com) upon pre-registering. Using any other materials, schools will design blades that maximize electrical output while documenting all trials and experimentation. The winner will be determined as the team whose turbine produced the highest voltage output. Ties will be broken according to comprehensiveness and clarity of the teams wind lab experimental design trial logs. Design specs and rules will be provided when the school pre-registers and receives their kit.
Most Ecological Yardscape Award - Working with your parents, complete information about the ecology of your home yardscape at www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/ulep. You will receive an ecological assessment report of your yard and one most ecologically landscaped yard will receive an Environmental Stewardship Award! Sponsor: Urban Landscape Ecology Program.
Environmental Educator of the Year - This Award is designed to honor outstanding educators with a focus on k-12 activities. If you know an educator, who incorporates nature and earth stewardship into K-12 activities, please let us know! Self nominations are welcome. Nominees must submit a completed form briefly explaining their educational, training, and professional activities and at least one major contribution to environmental improvement in detail. Nominators should send a cover letter on behalf of the nominee.
